Ciara O'Shea with Madison Central High School in Richmond, Kentucky puts herself in the top position for the Women's High School outdoor 5K.

Ciara won her heat by one second going up against collegiate competition which pushed her to obtaining a 29s PR of 16:23.67.

We asked Ciara what contributed overall to her top mark.  "I thought this race may set up for a fast time. I knew I had to be patient. I sort of took a back seat and let things develop. As the race opened up, I just tried to make sure I avoided minor mistakes like letting gaps open up between groups. Towards the last 1200 I just decided to push and see what happened!"

Also, looking at her splits, she averaged 1:18 and her first full lap was the same as her 2nd to last.  Ciara ran a smart race with a fast 1:13.66 last lap, winning her heat.

Comparing to last year's national marks, that would have been a strong 3rd in the nation for the Women's outdoor 5K.

She was 27th overall for the 5K at the Adidas Raleigh Relays, March 23-25, 2023 and we're excited to see what remains for her senior year in Track & Field.
